From our feedback, what stood out the most was the difficulty audience members had following our narrative. Although it wasn't said by all audience members, and some actually picked this out as one of their favourite parts of the video.
It was encouraging to read very few negative comments of the technical elements involved in the production and post-production of our music video. This was something which we worked hard to improve on from AS level, so the comments suggest that we have in fact improved.

Magazine Cover
_________________________________________________________________________________
We kept the fonts used in the magazine cover the same as the font used for the artists name in the album.
We followed what most other magazine adverts have done, by using the album cover as the central focus, with just a small amount of text around it. We put a red line on the edge of the album as it made it clear what to look for when looking to buy the album; using the colour picker tool to make the red the same colour as the one in the album.
We inserted the stars as a rating system, which is commonly used in magazine adverts, and it encourages people to buy the album. The quotes are in a different font as it differentiates them as different media organizations, and makes the praise stand out.

Shots for Digipack Inlay
_________________________________________________________________________________
These are the shots which we would include in the inlay of the album cover, taken during filming.
We cropped them so that they were square, to fit into the album, and then changed the colours. In the first picture we lightened it, then increased the brightness and contrast. We also reduced the hue, as where we had increased the others, the colour had started to go quite orange. In the second image we done a similar thing.
Overall, I like the effect on these two images. They are in a natural setting, but the brightness added makes it seem less realistic and less gloomy. It also contrasts to the black and white of the album cover.

_________________________________________________________________________________
We decided to use familiar conventions of other digipacks we looked at. For example, on John Legend's Evolver album cover, there is a black and white image of him, with a contrasting red text over the top. This is similar in our album, however, we have used a close up rather than a midshot. Also, on John Legend's album cover, the image is taken in a studio, with a plain white background, this was obviously difficult for us to do. We think this works well though, as the song isn't completely R&B, it has influences of other genres, and this is represented by the album cover.

Filming Update
Filming is completed!
We have recorded all footage planned from our original plan. We are hoping that when we start editing (today!), we will have all the footage we need.

An Alternative Plan
Due to the fact our deadline is fast approaching, we have had to try and think of an alternative plan.
Although we hope to use our original plan - because the people we are using in our film often have prior engagements, it has become apparent that this may not be possible.
With previous issues, we decided it would be best to be prepared should we not get all filming completed.
Our New Idea:
We plan to have the male lead 'breaking free' from an office, with a snap shot of him walking though town, and travelling, until he reaches the airport. The finale to the video will be him finding his girlfriend at the airport, about to leave.

Location Shots
This is the room we will be using as the hotel room, the lamps will be on to provide some artificial light and hopefully provide highlights of facial features.
We are also going to change the sheets on the bed to black to hopefully provide more conventions of the R&B genre.
We will also be using the back wall of this room in order to create a back drop for the scene where the couple are having a meal.
We will be using this field for when the couple go for a walk. The effect we're hoping to achieve from this is that the audience will think that perhaps they are settled down, and have moved in together, hence the more natural setting.

Digipack Analysis: Frank Ocean
The monochrome of the image, along with the rough, scratch effects of the image give the idea of the artists being 'rough'. However with the shirt and tie, it makes them seem professional, and the strong them in idea that they have started from the bottom and worked hard to get fame.
This is again reiterated with the casualness of the cardigan, with the shirt and tie, which contrasts the two sides to their persona. The everyday person and then the star. It is similar to the way hip-hop stars will wear lots of jewellery, but in a lot more subtle way.
The font is clear and sharp, differing from the costume with loose tie and cardigan. The colours are inverted to their background, making them stand out, and the artists name obvious, larger than the album name.
Digipack Analysis: Avicii

The most prominent part of the front cover of this album is the album title, 'True'. The font of this text is like it is painted on by hand. It is almost urban in its style, however, by making it a crisp white colour, it makes it more of a 'clean style' which is more representative of the laid back R&B/dance chill-out style.
Although the artist is featured, they are in a silhouette style, suggesting they are not the focus. It could be a representation of the music, which although usually includes singing, there is a large amount of post production editing, with different synthesized instruments and effects.
The artist is wearing a hooded jumper and a cap, which is also a common feature for R&B artists. However, it is not over the top, as it often is, where the artists ooze confidence, making themselves seem 'gangster'. This artist is looking away, and it looks as though he is actually trying to make himself look smaller. This shows the cross-genre, the R&B and then the less 'celebrity' style of the dance and chill-out genre.
The bands name is written in the same font through all their albums, and therefore makes it more of a logo. This would increase the 'branding' of the artists, making them instantly recognizable, whether it be on social media sites or album covers. It would therefore act as an advertising tool, as people who may like one song, would look out for their logo in other songs.
Digipack Analysis: John Legend
The front cover follows the conventions of other album covers in the genre. The image is black and white, but it seems to have been made more of a silhouette, taking out some of the details. The red text contrasts with the cover, and really stands out.
The back cover is very plain, with just red text. However, again like other artists in the genre, the font and colours are carried over both sides of the album cover.

Initial Digipack Ideas - Fonts
Initial Digipack Idea: Images
We felt it was important to have some ideas on what we were doing for our digipack as it may be better to take the pictures during filming so that the costume and setting is correct.
We decided for the cover it should be similar to the way Drake's albums are taken almost directly from the music video.
We decided for the cover it should be similar to the way Drake's albums are taken almost directly from the music video.
We decided it would be important to include the artist on the cover as most solo males in the genre do, for example:
From the narrative of the song, we decided there should be no eye contact, and he should be looking down like Drake is seen doing. Perhaps with his hands either side of his head, sitting on the bed.

Risk Assessment
Things which could go wrong during filming:
Candles setting something alight.
Tripping over the camera/wires/tripod.
Accident when travelling to the locations.
_________________________________________________________________________________
To counter these we made sure the candles were lit for the shortest time possible, as well as being out of reach of any soft furnishings, which could easily set light.
We also used tape over camera wires, to make sure it wasn't loose, so people are less likely to trip over it.
We made sure we travelled as carefully as possible to the different locations.

Music Video Treatment
The ideas behind our music video were to use a common convention of R&B/chill-out music of making the artist seem a bad person, but then it turns out that they were mistaken. Thus, we decided to make it appear that the male had cheated on his girlfriend, but it turns out to be a mistake, and he was in fact only comforting a friend.
We were worried that this would be a bit boring, and it would be too similar to other videos. We decided to add a different dimension to our video, we would put the main narrative in reverse order, and therefore, provoking the audience to think more about the video, rather than just clicking to hear the song.
The location of the music video is to be in a room made to look as close to a hotel room as possible, with a double bed, and bedside tables. This will be the majority of the video, hopefully looking as realistic as possible to a real hotel room. There will also be use of outdoors settings, including the town and a village. These will be used to show the couple during happier times, and so the audience can get an idea of their relationship prior to the break up.
We will make some of the music video black and white too. It will be used when the lead male is alone after they have split up, reflecting his sadness. This will be in between normal coloured shots, and so therefore will contrast with them.

Dates
Hollie and I are meeting at Hollie's house on Tuesday 22nd October in order to get the room ready for filming, as well as doing some test shots to check lighting, angles etc.
We will then be filming in October half term, as yet we have not decided on a concrete date, but we hope to do it as early as possible in order to make sure we have all the footage we need.
This will probably be either Monday 28th or Tuesday 29th October.
Locations
Hotel Room - Hollie's Annex - there will be a bed and chair, we will try and make it look as much like a hotel room as possible, while also being modern in order to fit with the R&B genre.
Restaurant - somewhere in Hollie's house, needs to be a plain wall, then we will bring a table and put plates/cutlery on it.

Audience Profile
An idea of someone who may watch our music video:
Name: Jen Brett
Age: 17
Location: Outskirts of London, not a particularly wealthy or poor area, typically working class.
Occupation: Studying Business Studies, Law and Statistics at college. She is fairly clever, getting good grades, but she isn't the sort to be getting A/A* grades, and is okay with that.
She also has a part time job in a ladies fashion store in town every Saturday, she doesn't particularly enjoy it, but it means she has money for when she goes to see her friends and nice outfits to wear.
Interests: Jen spends her money on new clothes and gig tickets. She tries to see as many artists as possible before they 'hit the big time', as she thinks it will be a much more intimate and personalised concert, before record labels dictate the way things should go. She isn't just into girly things. She has an interest in football and plays every Sunday, occasionally going to matches with her Dad. The guys she meets are always shocked by this, her girly outfits do not exactly scream pie and mash on a Wednesday night for a Champions League game.
Beliefs: Although Jen may come across as being stuck up and judgemental, she isn't. She is just extremely shy since she was bullied in year 7. She treats everybody equally and only opens up to those she trusts.

Meeting: Update on Music Video
We decided that we would tell the story of a break up, yet it would be told in reverse.
It will start in black and white, showing their break up as being a bad time, gradually getting more and more colourful as it goes back through to the time when they first meet.
The main male will be misunderstood, when he is found with a girl, thinking he is having an affair, however he is actually just being a friend. We decided to do this because it is common in R&B music videos that the male will be shown to be a bad boy who is misunderstood.
The chorus will be lip-synced as we feel it is important to have an aspect of 'performance', as a proof of them being able to sing and that it is really them telling their story.
Survey Results
We sent this survey to around 80 people on Facebook, with a wide age range. With us putting in the message which genre of music we were interested in finding their opinion on, it may have stopped them being interested almost immediately. This is why we think that there is only an age range of 15-20.
This helps us when planning our music video, as it means that we have an idea of who to aim at, it especially helps with the analysis. This is because it means we can try to include stuff that would relate to people of that age, and stuff they have experienced themselves, or what they aspire to happen to them in later life, as they get a little bit older.
With this survey being sent to a wide range of people with very different music tastes it means that even with some people preferring rock as a genre, for example, a majority will still like this genre.
With around 35% of people using YouTube converter it shows this is a popular source of music, and therefore, they will see the video, meaning it has to make an impression on the audience. With only a small percentage of people buying their music physically from shops it shows the internet dominance, which reiterates the fact the video has to make an impact, in order to stand out in a strong market of videos. Some things the audience said:
"Rhythm and blues"
"Soft, relaxing, warm"
"Relaxing, slow"
"Chilled, relaxed"
"Calm"
"Love, relaxing"
"Happiness"
Some things the audience said:
"No aggressiveness, e.g. sudden or rapid movements"
"Moving slowly, camera panning"
"Black and white scenes"
"Someone singing about love, crying their heart out"
"Black and white scenes"
"Deep images, dark unsaturated images"
"Dark scenes, no bright colours"
From these two we thought the actions in the shots should be slow and calm, however the cutting rate should be fast in order to stop it being too boring, with the pace of the song itself being slow. We also decided the lighting should be low key, and the black and white effects we're planning will also keep this calmness.

YouTube Comments from similar songs in the genre
The first comment suggests the song is of importance, and that perhaps the song will be open in a tab, but the viewer will not be watching. Because of this it is important that our video draws in the reader and makes them want to watch.
The second comments shows that some members of the audience we are aiming towards pay attention to the video, and therefore we need to be sure the narrative is strong in our video to interest them.

Music Video Analysis: Rudimental - Not Giving In
The slow motion in this scene is used for effect, and to cause shock. It shows an abusive father attacking the mother, which is obviously something which the audience are going to be affected by seeing. It also provides something for the rest of the music video to contrast to, with the faster paced following once the young boys have left home, suggesting again the common convention of 'breaking free' and a better life.
This close up shot is significant as it presents the idea of longing to escape reality as such. The darkness from the room the boy is in, as shown in the last picture too, contrasts from the brightness of the outside world.
This crane shot, which features the young boy in the window to the right of the frame, which slowly moves out and away from the scene shows the contrast between the run down part of town in which the boy resides and the riches of the city with the sky scrapers.Music Video Analysis: Avicii - Wake Me Up
The first thing seen in the music video is establishing shots of the location. This location contrasts from the usual in music videos of this genre, where it is much more likely to be the case that they are in either a luxurious house or somewhere near the beach on a Balearic island. However, it is commonplace that in music videos of this genre for the lead actor to have
A recurrence in the music video is the use of a birds eye mid-shot over the bed. It is used in order to show the lead female and her daughter in an 'ordinary' setting. It is especially effective where there is part of the narrative between each return to this shot. This shows perhaps less ordinary scenes, such as them 'breaking free' [this itself being a convention from this genre], this then creates a strong effect, perhaps making the audience feel that they too can be almost 'heroes' during the day, and then go back to a normal life.
Another feature of this music video is the soft focus pan. This is due to the fact that the original shot of a midshot of the girls arm, with the tattoo in the centre of the frame is quite shocking. Because of this, the soft focus lessens the impact, with the pan round to the lead females arm with the same symbol suggests a deeper meaning. The symbol itself is the artist's logo, however in this context it almost elevates them to a 'clan' as such.
This low angle shot is seen when there is the lyrics 'I tried carrying the weight of the world', which is said in Goodwin's theory, where he says that music videos are a visual representation of the lyrics. The low angle shot of the buildings make you think that they are carrying the weight of the city, and in a greater context, the world, on their shoulders.
This genre often features some kind of performance in order to convince the audience of their talent. In this case, the lead female of the music video is shown in the audience of a festival which the artist is playing at, having no personal link. However, it has some suggestion that the artist 'saved her' as such from her bad life, and furthermore, that she belongs, what with us seeing the same symbol tattooed on her arm, enforcing the idea of a 'clan'.Sunday, 29 September 2013
Music Video Analysis: John Legend - All Of Me
There are some elements of the video following Goodwin's theory, for example at 2:25, he sings: 'my head's under water but I'm breathing fine' and it shows him underwater, sinking, with bubbles as though he is 'breathing fine'.
The video follows conventions of R&B music videos with both performance and narrative parts of the video. As well as the fact there is a male artist, with an attractive female character. The common feature of a lot of videos in the genre is to have a relationship, perhaps encountering issues, and then there is a happy ending, showing them married. The wedding is particularly contrasting, as the rest of the video is black and white, and then the time when they are happy, is in colour.

Music Video Analysis: Drake - Hold On, We're Going Home
This video features lots of close ups of props. One of the conventions of R&B music videos is usually to show a lot of modern technology to portray the lead star as wealthy. One example is there being many close ups of telephones, although now they seem old-fashioned, the video is set in 1985, therefore at the time the telephones used may have been considered as fairly high-tech.
There's also different types of shots, including a pan and close up, of various guns and weaponry. This may be due to the fact the idea of gang culture has an undercurrent throughout the R&B genre. It contrasts from the image of the male lead we were getting at the beginning of the video, where he looks sharp and clean, in his costume of a white suit. You would not expect him to be involved in organized crime. It is shown to be him going to rescue his girlfriend, however, therefore showing as an almost 'hero'. Again, this is another convention common in R&B music videos, with the lead characters, or artist, being thought of a bad guy turning good.
Some of the dialogue at the beginning of the video has connotations of seeing the female as a possession. For example, 'he took what is mine, now I've taken what is his'. This may be a representation of males views on females at the time this was set, 1985. However, it could relate, again, to the R&B genre. The females are seen in quite a voyeuristic way, shown with the tilt of camera when the female is in her underwear at the beginning.
Music Video Analysis: Justin Timberlake - That Girl
- This video features the common convention of R&B music videos, with the story of a male and female couple.
- There is use of colour and black and white filters. In this video, the black and white filter is used when they seem to be rehearsing, and then there is no filter in the time they are together, in a more natural way.
- The use of the colour filter, is the pink overlay when he sings 'that girl'. This almost emphasises his point, relating to Goodwin's theory of lyrics being presented with the video.

Our Song
Lyrics:
Wherever I am, I feel a storm rushing in
You come closer, we're like trees in the wind
You say hold on, you say we're over now
It's been going so long, I see our bridges burning down
You were right this world we're living in ain't real, it ain't real
The outside's quiet but you could be silent,
I'd still hear you, you can't hear me
But when you wake I'll be gone, I know the way back but I feel so lost
Maybe in time, I'll move on, if it can't be me then I know they'll be one
It's 5am I'm lying thinking
Of how I let you down I should have paid you more attention
An' all of my mistakes I hope you know that I regret them
An' all the times I told you I love you I really meant them, meant them all
I took in way way much more than I was giving, giving
The past looks so much better than the present
And we can't keep on fucking like it's nothing we're not changing
The feelings that we have for one another and it's making
Everything much harder cos it's always amazing
And when I'm with another girl it's never quite the same thing
You said I never cared I'm telling you that you're mistaken
The city that we lived in never helped the situation
Tell me all the time we spent together wasn't wasted
I love you more than anyone I mean it when I say it
But when you wake I'll be gone, I know the way back but I feel so lost
Maybe in time, I'll move on, if it can't be me then I know they'll be one (x2)

Mock: Analysis - Digipack
I am pleased with the effects over the pictures, the way the green is brought out in each picture. Also, how the tone of the image is fairly calm. The clarity is also clear enough I feel, without being too sharp and therefore again toning the harshness of the image down.
The problems with the digipack I feel are the fonts and colours used. With the trees in the background it was hard to find a colour that wasn't too garish, yet could be seen over the dark green and then also the lighter patches. I also do not like the different colours on the front and back, however, again we had a problem with getting the text to be clear enough with the colours of the image.
Overall, with this being my first real attempt at using Adobe Photoshop I am pleased with how it went. It means I have some idea of what to do when it comes to making our real digipack, and also how to think of the colours and fonts which could be used when taking the picture for it.

Mock: Analysis - Video
I am pleased with how our video went, especially the lip syncing. I think throughout the video it looks as though the artist could be singing the song, and this is something we will definitely use our skills in when it comes to our real video.
I also think it closely follows the shots as seen in the original video, which we had planned using the storyboard. This gives us an insight into how many seconds the average cut is, helping us when it comes to planning our main video.

Mock: Planning
Video
Storyboard
Digipack
Costume: We decided on a pale pink lacy top as it is quite girly, without being too obvious. We done this because we wanted the portrayal of the 'pop princess' to appeal to both males and females. For the males it would be the 'girly' girl for them to admire, and for the females the 'independent woman' who isn't overly girly and is making a life for herself.
Shot type: We decided to use a mid shot of the artist as you could get enough of the facial features in clearly, along with some of the body. Also with the setting being in the woods, you could still see some of this, to give a sense of innocence.
Equipment: For the digipack we used the camera on my phone as it would be easier than using a digital camera, and would be a lot quicker to upload. It was also easier when we were shooting as it is more compact with built in memory.
